#Throwback to one of the most validating moments of my career…Not being booed off the stage in any of the 4 rounds of Amateur Night at the Apollo in #Harlem #NY. To be a contestant on a show I watched as a child was more than enough validation that music chose me, and this was no accident. Came 1st in rounds 1 and 2, tied for 3rd in round 3, making it to round 4, where a MJ impersonator won. Some days I still don’t believe it happened. #Apollo #TBT #Believe #Dream #WorkHard #Passion #NeverGiveUp #JustDoIt #Music
The M.E. Year In Review 2013
For the past 2 years I’ve made it my duty to generate a year in review. Too many times we get so caught up in moving forward that we don’t acknowledge the beauty and the inspirational power of the past. The things we have accomplished but inadequately celebrated, because we were too hungry for more. In the event your life is to end tomorrow, all you would have was the past that you created. The same past that people will know and remember you for. So here are some of my most memorable Mario Evon moments of 2013.
With a prime spot, I performed on the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Talent Stage, just after Dionne Warwick, and right before John Legend performed on the main stage. It was my ‘Guess who’s back in Jamaica' performance and marked an awesome beginning of the year for M.E.
M.E. and the leading lady, Apryl McIntosh.
The iconic blue and yellow shop in Keto, Westmoreland.
In late July I auditioned for NBC’s singing competition, The Voice, and though I didn’t make it, I had the courage to share this experience within the last month or so. Initially reluctant to share that my audition was unsuccessful, I realized the success came not only in the bravery to audition, but also from the lessons learned from the experience. Here is my FB post on the same, where I pour my heart out.
I got to see BEY!!!! Let’s just say I’m highly critical of music and the art form, and this sexy beast of a performing woman had me speechless. She worked! I got to share the moment with Danae and Janella, two of my most awesome friends from high school days, so that’s pretty much that. Amazing! The end.

In September I would release the 1st single, ‘Soul Tek’, off of my upcoming debut album, ‘Reggae-Soul Volume 1: M.E. On Love’. The song is available through all popular online distribution/streaming services.

Only a few days before my earthstrong I would get the pleasure of being the only R&B singer on the October 5th installment of Jamaica’s Premiere Hip Hop show, Pay Attention. Again truly honoured to be asked to be on this event, I went and gave my all, and the Pay Attention audience truly gave me back mad love in return. Check out Jessica’s serenade below, and don’t sleep on Jamaican Hip Hop.
After ‘Live & Revive’, it seemed Macau would want some more of M.E. and invited me to sing along with Ruth Royes at the Macau Gaming Lounge’s 1 year anniversary. Dario Morgan filled out our lil trio with his amazing guitar chops. Check us out at 2:26 below.
OCTOBER 9!! Happy Birthday to M.E. So grateful for another year of life, and I got to spend it with friends and family at 689 by Brian Lumley then Pepperseed. I had everything that I needed on my special day.
I would arrange to go to my Alma Mater, Campion College and link up with the Campion SFA (Sixth Form Association). Following your passions was the aim of the game and of course a little singing was not detrimental to the sharing. It was an amazing time, and the students asked me some very relevant questions about music, life, medicine and career choices. They were a fun bunch, and I def plan to go back. A small crew dubbed themselves the #Evonisers :)
I went to PERU!!!!! I must admit that I fell in love with the Peruvian people, the food and the general vibe of the country. Strangely enough many elements of the country reminded me of Jamaica. Pops and I walked the streets, took cabs and spoke as much Spanish as we could. I’d definitely go back. Lima was great. Machu Picchu next.
Finally our hard work creating the music video for ‘Soul Tek’ would come to fruition, as we decided to have a free and public launch of the music video at the new Ribbiz Ultra Lounge. Special thanks to Kamal Bankay and Ribbie Chung for being open to the event and recognizing the importance of live music and the independent musician. It was a short but sweet night, and my 1st ever music video launch event. These are the moments I deem as successes in my career. Some want you to win a Grammy tomorrow, but my team just made a video without breaking the bank and also showed it publicly without breaking the bank. This we give thanks for and celebrate.

'Soul Tek' - Mario Evon (Official Music Video) - Filmed, directed, edited and co-produced by Reynaldo Martin. Other producers - Elva Clarke & Mario Guthrie.
Soul Tek would be featured a few times over on RE TV, HYPE TV, On Stage, RJR, ZIP FM, KOOL, Nationwide, Stylz FM, Susie Q, plus blogs like LargeUp.com, Jamaicans.com, JamaicansMusic.com, JussBuss.tv, Headline Entertainement, just to name a few. The support has been enormous. Appreciate the love.
Then there was December and what seemed like a 1 week media blitz that put my face in the minds of many Jamaicans. Firstly, I was featured on Smile Jamaica, on Television Jamaica. You can watch clips from that performance HERE.
M.E. and the band. From left: Djenne (Keys), Miguel (Guitar), Elisha (Drums), Dejah (Background vocals), Niquet (Background vocals), Stephan (Percussion) & Craig (Bass).

As an employee of the Bustamante Hospital and also a Recording Artist, I got the pleasure of being the MC for the Press Launch of the Shaggy & Friends Concert, as well as the Kids Treat, which I also performed at. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Goldianna (Jamaica’s only female magician), Kip Rich, Konshens, Jah Bouks, Microwave, Jamal Gordon, Christopher Martin and none other than Shaggy himself. It was really an epic day! I got interviewed and featured on Entertainment Report and made great connections.
M.E. and di boss, Shaggy, after the Press Launch.
Just a lil recap of the day. From top appearing with M.E. is Shaggy, Christopher Martin (Recording Artist), Rebecca Packer (Co-founder & Organizer of Shaggy & Friends) & Peter Lloyd (Marketing Manager of Digicel Jamaica).
I was invited to sing at a treat for the families of the inmates at the General Penitentiary. I make it my duty to give back not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year, as best I can. This event was a lot of fun, because I could see the families were happy for the offerings of the day, and I got to see my old bredrins, T.O.K. Thanks to Mark Gonzales for bussin’ mi on dis one.
M.E. & T.O.K.
The day after the General Penitentiary performance, which was the day after the Shaggy & Friends gig, was my KOOL 97 FM Interview with Yohann and Joy. It was a fun and detailed interview into what I’ve been up to, and we all really had a lot of fun. Little did I know I had an interview that same evening with Cliff Hughes on Nationwide, about my unsuccessful Voice audition, and my being a doctor with such a serious passion for music. That night the Entertainment Report interview would be aired, and the next day my video would be featured on Winford Williams’ ‘On Stage’. Good things were clearly happening and a lot of it outside of my control. Give thanks.
M.E. with Joy Kelly & Yohann Stephens from KOOL 97 FM after my feature on ‘Earshot’.
It was definitely a ‘689 Christmas’, when Jai-Gary Smith and Stephanie thought it would be great to feature myself and Stephanie singing originals, covers and of course Christmas songs at the amazing 689 by Brian Lumley. The vibe in the restaurant was intimate and Christmas-sy. They were great to me on my birthday, and now I got to mek some musical noise in their restaurant. Check out some clips from the show filmed and edited by RudeKidDesigns:
M.E., musically supported by Stephen Maxwell (keys), Yelluh (Percussion), Miguel (Guitar) & Sparrow (Bass).
I hope the Christmas season was happy and prosperous, and I wish you a productive, amazing and Happy New Year. Out with the old and in with the new.
That said, the new year is not so much about all of my achievements, of which I am proud, but to remind you that anything you really want in this world can be attained with some vision and perseverance. I wish for you a clarity of mind going into the new year. I wish for you to feel compassion towards others who are in different situations than you are, that you will see the person inside of the shell they were given. I pray that you will love yourself to the point where you allow no one to take advantage of you; to the point where you can say no to things that degrade your character because your self-worth is greater than pleasing another. I hope that you will find a connection to some greater power, and that you will realize that you have very little of it anyways, and that in any second all that you have can be gone. The new year is really just our way of reminding ourselves to try to be the best us we can be. So to that I say Happy New Year my friends. Thank you for all of your support in my endeavours, and whether I am present in your lives or not, know that I love and respect every one of you for who you are and what you represent.
Check out my previous year in reviews:
So this next section is really only for the real M.E. supporters, cuz I’m gonna go in on some emotional ish, so if you can’t handle the heat then pack it up right hurr and gid outta the kitchen. LOL.
Special thanks to #TeamME:
Elva Clarke (Assistant Project Coordinator) - You have become my career rock, and such a dear friend. The contour of my career has changed since you have entered it and words cannot express my gratitude.
To my brother, sister and family. I love you so much. The patience and understanding you have all had with me as I pursue something that maybe you never fully understood, but now I know you get it and your support has been my fuel. Thanks for all your help, advice and just simply your presence.
To the musicians: You also have me a bit speechless. I have been working with essentially the same crew since January, and all I have to say is that your were brought together not by me but by God and divine intervention. Djenne, thanks for always believing, once I made you believe I was serious. Miguel thanks for always being willing and determined to make it happen no matter what. Craig, thanks for coming on board to play for someone you never knew before, and always being so humble and kind. Ellis, your energy, spirit and talent always exudes pure love and livity for music. We appreciate it. Obi, thank you for being persistent, and for always reminding me that you will be there, and for showing up, even when di dollars nah run. Jasmine, thanks for always just being you unapologetically, and for sharing your beautiful talent. Suzanne, I also thank you for being comfortable in your skin and I’m honoured to perform with you. Your family is uniquely blessed. Niquet and Dejah, thanks for filling in recently. We loved your sound and vibe. To all the musicians who have ever played for me, I appreciate you.
Reynaldo Martin, my friend, my graphic designer, my videographer, sometimes my boss. You have a beautiful mind. Visual and complex but in such a perfect way. You see in pictures and in stories and it is a gift you were born with. The visuals you have provided over the years to accompany my brand have stood out as professional and elegant. People would have no idea how far back we go, but I thank you my brother. Nuff nuff love that I can’t even express here. Thanks over and over again. It is appreciated. Taj & Randy, look out for your thank yous this year. It’s happening.
To my fans/supporters, you feed my soul more than anyone else. On any given day when dat give up energy waan tek mi, I read a post about how much you appreciate my voice or how much you admire me for following my dreams, then I remember I’m not alone on this journey, and if I give up, then I fail you. Mi luv unnu!
Rohan Dwyer(Studio/Mixing/Mastering Engineer), I have know you much longer than we have worked together, but your expertise, perspective and judgment is priceless, and I am really happy that you allowed me to work with you. It has been a pleasure, and I look forward to working even more in the future.
Friends, you get a different thank you from the fans because you all really are the foundation under the foundation. Ride or die. Love you guys. Nothing else to say really. You know how I feel about you.
Haters, well I can’t say I’m aware of too many of you, but hateration energy I get sometimes, and I welcome it. It keeps me on my toes. Reminds me that this isn’t about winning fans all the time. Some will like you, and some won’t. This is about my journey and me sharing it with you, and all those who like the ride I welcome you to come on board. The rest of you can wait for the next bus…with LOVE.
If I left anyone or category of people out, know that it was without Mal-intent, and I appreciate all you have done for me.
Blessed love. Leggo 2014!
