A dear friend of mine who is very multi-talented was sharing with me his many projects and plans. In his talking he said he worked from 6am to 7pm, yet he never goes into an office. It made me look at my work hours as an independent musician. I could immediately ascertain that I didn’t wake up at 6am to do anything for fun, but I could attest to working even more hours than a 9-5, as passion work sometimes has you working almost anytime.
So ask yourself, do you treat your passion like a 9-5? And if the answer is no, then it is something you should consider, if you really love what it is your passion is. A 9-5 doesn’t necessarily mean you have to work in those hours, but it means that you must treat your passion with the respect of a job, and honour the activities and the responsibilities that accompany it, from punctuality to following up with people to absolutely divine customer service.
So if your passion is simply a hobby, but you want it to flourish into something bigger, consider treating it like a 9-5. Make a list. Wake up at a specific time and start to tackle the duties for the day. You may be surprised at the rewards you reap.
